Free sunscreen checklist: how to read a Japanese sunscreen label
Updated November 1, 2026

A printable checklist for choosing and using sunscreen, including the PA rating used on Japanese products.
Read the label
- SPF measures protection against UVB (burning) rays; dermatologists recommend SPF 30 or higher.
- The PA rating (PA+ to PA++++) is a Japanese scale for UVA protection; more plus signs mean more UVA protection.
- Look for broad-spectrum protection and water resistance if you swim or sweat.
Apply it right
- Use enough: about a shot-glass amount for the body, and a generous amount for the face.
- Apply about 15 minutes before going outside.
- Reapply at least every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating.
Buying from abroad
- Products sold in Japan are regulated in Japan, not by the U.S. FDA; check ingredients if you have sensitive skin.
- Patch-test new products before using them on your whole face.
